‘Eclipse’ Bites Box Office With $82.5M Over Holiday Weekend
Filed under: Box Office

“The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” has risen to an $82.5 million haul over the long Fourth of July weekend and lifted its total to $175.3 million after just six days, according to studio estimates Monday.
The vampire romance from Summit Entertainment
finished at No. 1 over the four-day weekend, despite a steep drop in its daily take after a $68.5 million start last Wednesday, the second biggest opening day ever.
“Movies that pop this big on opening day, it’s virtually impossible to keep up that breakneck pace,” said Paul Dergarabedian, box-office analyst for Hollywood.com. “We’ve seen this with a lot of movies where the first day is their biggest day, then it kind of settles into a more normal pattern.”
Coming in second for the weekend with $53.2 million from Friday to Monday was Paramount’s action fantasy “The Last Airbender,” pushing its total to $70.5 million since opening Thursday. The movie did strong business despite terrible reviews.
Disney’s Pixar Animation blockbuster “Toy Story 3,” which had been No. 1 the two previous weekends, slipped to third-place with $42.2 million, raising its domestic total to $301.1 million.
“Toy Story 3″ shot past last year’s “Up” at $293 million to become the No. 2 hit for Pixar, behind only “Finding Nemo” at $339.7 million.
1. “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse,” $82.5 million.
2. “The Last Airbender,” $53.2 million.
3. “Toy Story 3,” $42.2 million.
4. “Grown Ups,” $26.5 million.

6. “The Karate Kid,” $11.5 million.
7. “The A-Team,” $4.3 million.

Shrek Stomps All Over Sex At U.S. Box Office
Filed under: Box Office,Movie News

Shrek Forever After has slain the girls from Sex And The City 2 to score a second week at number one in the battle of the U.S. box office.
The animated 3D movie reigned supreme with takings of $43.3 million (£28.9 million), beating Sex and the City 2′s opening gross of $32.1 million (£21.4 million), based on ticket sales over the three-day weekend.
The romantic comedy, starring Sarah Jessica Parker and Kim Cattrall, grossed an extra $14.2 million from midnight screenings on Wednesday night and showings on Thursday to bring its total up to $46.3 million.

Jake Gyllenhaal’s Disney action/adventure Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time enters at three with $30.1 million, while Iron Man 2 slips to fourth position and Robin Hood rounds out the new top five at five.

Iron Man 2 Blasts To Top Of U.S. Box Office
Filed under: Box Office

Iron Man 2 has rocketed to the top of the U.S. box office chart to score the fifth biggest opening weekend in history with a powerful $133.6 million.
The sequel to the 2008 hit, starring Robert Downey, Jr. as the comic book superhero, dominated movie theaters across America this weekend (07-09May10) as the nation celebrated Mother’s Day on Sunday.
The bumper figures overshadowed the takings of the original Iron Man, which grossed $98.6 million when it debuted in 2008.
However the follow-up failed to match the record set by The Dark Knight in 2008, which holds the title for the biggest opening weekend ever at the U.S. box office with $158.4 million. Iron Man 2 sits behind Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest in the record books – the Disney adventure is fourth on the list after taking $135.6 million upon its release in 2006.
Iron Man 2′s U.S. profits takes the Jon Favreau movie’s worldwide total to over $327 million.
Last week’s most popular film, a remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street, fell to second place with $9.1 million, while animated hit How to Train Your Dragon held strong at three with $6.7 million, more than a month after its release.

That puts the Paramount release based on the Marvel Comics superhero on track for a debut weekend of $125 million to $135 million, which would make it the fifth-biggest opening weekend on the box-office charts.
The first “Iron Man” movie had a $98.6 million debut weekend.
“Iron Man 2″ has taken in nearly $150 million overseas since it debuted in many international markets last week. Worldwide, the movie has climbed to a $200 million total.
