John Mayer – Nicely Done!

Filed under: Celebs Do Good, Gomez TV, John Mayer

Everyone knows that John Mayer has recently been in a shit storm of problems since his Playboy Interview hit the streets.

I’ve also never been a fan of Mayer or his music but I have to give props when due. He did a good thing here probably giving this young boy one of his best lifetime memories not to mention the perks.

The following is a story from a local paper out of Southern Jersey, The Courier Post.

Austin Christy stood next to his favorite performer before a crowd of roughly 25,000 people Sunday, and felt completely calm. The 11-year-old stayed cool as he lived out a dream most people will never realize.

Austin persuaded rock sensation John Mayer to invite him on stage at the Wachovia Center to play lead guitar on the musician’s hit song “Belief.”

Mayer brought Austin on stage after he read a sign the St. Mary’s Regional School sixth-grader held high over his head: “Can I play “Belief’ with you?”

“I was really excited. I was thinking that it wasn’t real,” Austin said.

He can play a number of Mayer’s tunes, but “Belief” is a special song he learned for his mother, who was in the front row with him. It’s her favorite song and he practiced it secretly to play in front of her when he was ready.

Not only did Austin get to play the song with Mayer, but he also got to keep the singer’s red Squier guitar and picks he used during the concert. Austin plans to frame the guitar and picks.

Mayer signed the base of the guitar: “To Austin, You rock. Keep playing. See you at your show.”

Then he signed it and noted the concert was in Philadelphia. (The note actually contains a slight error: Mayer mistakenly wrote Feb. 21, 2009.) That same sentiment was repeated to Austin on his way out of the venue as fans gathered around him hoping to get their picture with boy. A bodyguard even escorted him out, he said.

Austin has been playing guitar for two years. Sometimes when he practices, he watches or listens to Mayer play and tries to learn and mimic the artist.

Austin said he likes playing guitar because “it’s another way to express my feelings.” And he really likes Mayer’s music. Sunday was Austin’s second Mayer concert.

“His music is different than all the other artists,” Austin said. “A lot of them are R&B and hip-hop. He’s like a combination of pop and blues.”

As far as he and his family knew, that was the first time Mayer pulled someone on stage to play along with him.

After Austin finished the song, the boy and the musician exchanged thumbs ups.

“I said I was a big fan, and he said back to me he could tell,” Austin said. “I thought it was pretty cool because a lot of other artists wanted to play with him and he picked an 11-year-old out of a lot better artists.”

Austin’s mother, JoAnna Christy said Mayer said, “That’s all I wanted when I was a kid,” as her son walked off the stage.

“John Mayer, from the first time he came out, I feel Austin had definitely caught his eye,” she said.

Austin’s father and brother, both named Blake, also like Mayer and got to see him play at Sunday’s concert.

“I was more nervous than he was,” his 14-year-old brother Blake said.

Austin had hoped, but wasn’t sure if Mayer would respond to his sign, though he knew the singer tends to talk to his audience. But he knew if Mayer called on him, he wouldn’t have a problem playing that song.

“I believed in him that he would pull me up on stage and he believed in me that I would do a good job,” Austin said.

“The Hills” star Kristin Cavallari visits an American Red Cross blood donation truck in Hollywood to donate blood for the “Music Saves Lives” campaign.

Nice to see Kristin supporting a good cause. I sure hope the Blood Bank does drug tests on their donated blood or someone is going to be feeling pretty good after a transfusion!

Lady Gaga Cyndi Lauper Launch Lipsticks for MAC

Filed under: Celebs Do Good, Lady Gaga

Two of music’s most colorful performers are teaming up for an ad campaign for MAC cosmetics’ AIDS Fund.

Lady Gaga and Cyndi Lauper will appear in MAC’s new Viva Glam advertisements and are lending their names to new lipsticks. The Viva Glam line, which was started in 1994 and has already raised $150 million, donates every dollar of its sales to help men, women and children affected by HIV/AIDS.

“We want to make this trendy and fun,” Gaga, 23, told Women’s Wear Daily.

“We don’t want this discussion of AIDS to become this overly intellectual discussion, because we need to make discussions about AIDS really normal — not sitting in school nodding off because your teacher’s handed you some sheet that’s like all these percentages and graphs, and you’re thinking, well, she probably hasn’t had sex in 15 years. Sex education should be bright and vibrant and every woman should want to have this in her purse.”

(In fact, one ad reads, “You know you’ve got a sexy voice. Use it! Let’s talk about how to keep your love life safer, seductive and satisfying. Just between us girls!”)

The bubble-gum pink Viva Glam Gaga and the coral red Viva Glam Cyndi lipsticks will be available on March 18 and will cost $14, according to WWD.

“We lucked out,” Lauper, 56, said, adding that in the ’80s, she put lipstick everywhere — not just on her lips. “When we met each other, we liked each other and are interested in the same type of things. We laugh about similar things.”

Both stars are expected to make personal appearances on behalf of the initiative, and the ads will appear in magazines later this month.

Last month’s devastating earthquake in Haiti has brought together Miley Cyrus and celebrity pals for an online auction to aid in Haiti relief.

“Ever since the earthquake, I’ve been trying to do my part to help the people of Haiti – and I wanted to do more,”

the Disney star told People magazine.

Cyrus, 17, has recruited a group of star-studded celebs to help with donations for the auction. Nicole Richie donated jewelry from her House of Harlow line and Britney Spears will be auctioning off her custom silver Versace dress that she wore during the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards.

“Everyone has been so generous,” Cyrus told People.

“My mom and I started calling and texting all of our friends to see if they’d like to be a part of the auction. Demi Lovato was one of the first to respond. Hugh Jackman was also excited to donate something.”

The auction begins on February 8th. If you want to bid on the Herve Leger dress Cyrus wore to the Grammys, visit eBay.com/Miley.

Travolta Celebrating Haiti Mercy Mission Success

Filed under: Celebs Do Good, John Travolta

John Travolta is celebrating after learning his mercy mission to Haiti was a complete success.

The movie star, a licensed pilot, flew medics and seven tons of supplies and equipment to the earthquake-ravaged nation last week.

And he’s delighted to hear that promises he made to the doctors were kept.

He says,

“I had the privilege to fly my big Boeing down to Haiti because it was sitting there empty. I felt a duty and a responsibility to fill it with doctors and supplies and food and medicines.

“I promised the doctors on board that the supplies we brought would stay with them, so they wouldn’t get disbursed amongst all the others. I have since got full reports that the supplies did stay with them and they were very successful with hundreds of patients and it was all fresh and very user friendly.

“That was a very satisfying feeling to know, not just that I sent things, but that there is an end product that was successful.”

Last Monday’s mission was the second relief trip Travolta had organized for Haiti.

Class act all the way!

Demi Moore Vs. Kevin Bacon For $250,000 Charity Prize

Filed under: Celebs Do Good, Demi Moore

Demi Moore and Kevin Bacon are going head-to-head in an online contest to try and win a $250,000 grant for their favorite charity.

The Ghost star is championing the DNA Foundation, which works toward the elimination of sex slavery worldwide, to win the prize from the Pepsi Refresh Celebrity Challenge, while Bacon is campaigning on behalf of SixDegrees.org.

And both stars have made impassioned video pleas to win the support of the voting public.

Moore explains,

“Slavery exists worldwide and, to the surprise of many, slavery exists right here in the United States. We have a rough estimate of 300,000 children enslaved in America. This is someone’s sister, friend, daughter. I’m applying for a Pepsi grant so that they can support the work… and train 10 former victims as outreach workers. I believe the work they are doing is heroic.”

Bacon says of his cause,

“Six degrees is a network where people can go to donate to over a million charities and is the perfect place to put a $250,000 grant to good use. Our idea is to give thousands of gift cards out and they (public) get to donate to a million U.S. based charities.

“I’m going to personally reach out to those people to encourage them to buy more of these gift cards. We can then watch this $250,000 grow and grow.”

Visit www.refresheverything.com to vote for either Moore or Bacon’s appeal.
